Montecito’s Beloved Road Signs, Carefully Restored

Montecito’s signature street signs are getting a thoughtful refresh thanks to a collaborative effort between the Montecito Community Foundation and Clear Group.

The Montecito Community Foundation has long been dedicated to enriching the community—supporting local philanthropy while investing in projects that protect and enhance the area’s distinct character. Their work spans improvements to parks, funding for public safety initiatives, resources for local families, and support for community events. Among these efforts is the stewardship of more than 200 rustic street signs that define Montecito’s visual identity. Since 1966, the Foundation has overseen the creation and upkeep of these handcrafted markers, partnering with skilled artisans, woodworkers, and sign makers. Today, Clear Group is proud to join that legacy. With a team known for craftsmanship and a strong background in restoring some of Santa Barbara County’s most notable properties, we’re honored to contribute to preserving this local tradition.

“These street signs are quintessential to the city’s charm,” says Bailey Hochhalter, our President and Founder—and Central Coast native. “They are a unique, handcrafted, and immediately recognizable element of Montecito’s history. Our team really respects the preservation of this tradition, and we’re honored to use our expertise to continue restoring the signs.”

Maintaining the signs is a detailed and highly specialized process. Over time, they may require repair or replacement due to weathering, pests, theft, or accidental damage. Because there is no standardized typeface, every sign is individually carved, making each one unique. Crafting a replacement involves shaping and distressing the wood to match the original style, applying hand-cut reflective lettering, and securely mounting the finished piece in place. The Montecito Community Foundation routinely inspects the signs for wear, and residents can also report damage through the Foundation’s website. With support from Clear Construction and Clear Millwork, each restored sign is returned to its place—preserving a small but meaningful piece of Montecito’s identity.

ABOUT THE MONTECITO FOUNDATION

For more than 50 years, the Montecito Community Foundation has supported the community by funding projects that help preserve the uniqueness, elegance, and safety of the city’s surroundings. Past and ongoing projects include: the construction, installation, and maintenance of Montecito’s rustic wooden road signs; the purchase and transformation of the Corner Green at the intersection of East Valley and San Ysidro roads from a gas station to the lovely park we all enjoy today; and the replacement and beautification of local bus stops. If you wish to join with MCF in support of current or future community projects and activities, visit the MCF website at www.montecitofoundation.org for further information.
